Seahawks Swimming & Diving Falls To Rhode Island, 165-124

The Wagner College swimming and diving team swam hard against Atlantic-10 opponent, Rhode Island, but the Seahawks came up short 124-165 in their final non-conference meet of the regular season.

The Seahawks earned just two points in the days first event, before sweeping the 1000 freestyle, as Kristiana Kalibat (Princeton, NJ), Alexandra Cooney (Port Jervis, NY), and Mary Courtney Ryan (Staten Island, NY) finished as the top three.

It wasn't until 10 events later that junior Breanne Sweeney (Staten Island, NY) earned the team another nine first place points after swimming the 200 IM in 2:21.48, with freshman Kristen Lee (Cherry Hill, NJ) coming in second in a time of 2:22.17.

Wagner's relay teams continued to swim strong, with the team of Sarah Menendez (Land O'Lakes, FL), Lauren Meyer (Hamden, CT), Amber Weech (Nassau, Bahamas), and Meredith Ketchmark (Plainsboro, NJ) swimming to a first place finished in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.50.

The Seahawks earned second place points in the relay also, as Bethny Brown (Enfield, CT), Sarah Plucinsky (Allentown, PA), Cooney, and Tatum Colitz (Wyomissing, PA) swam the 200 team event in 1:46.60.

Sophomore diver Josephine Ieraci (Staten Island, NY) earned her squad eight points on the boards, as she took second place in the one-meter and three-meter events.

Junior Jakki Guenther (South Hadley, MA) also earned two second place finishes in both the 100 and 200 backstroke events, coming in with times of 1:02.00 and 2:11.59, respectively.

The Seahawks will take to the pool next on Friday, January 28, when they host Mount St. Mary's for their senior day at the Pool in Spiro Sports Center. That meet is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
