BOX SCORE
San Diego, CA - San Diego State defeated Wagner in the first game of today's doubleheader by a 7-2 count at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Bryan Crabb struck out five over 8.0 scoreless frames while helping the Aztecs improve to 19-20 as the Seahawks fall to 16-17.
Junior
Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) led an eight-hit attack, going 2-for-3 with a run-scoring double and a walk. Six other members of the Green & White batted safely, as sophomore
Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) and junior
Matt Logan (Wall, NJ / Wall) also recorded doubles.
Fifth-year senior
Andy Wells (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter's) was outstanding in relief, striking out six, including five-straight at one point, while yielding just one run over the final 3.0 innings. The six strikeouts are one off his career-high achieved on two occasions, most recently in a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart on May 18, 2008.
Unfortunately for Wagner, Crabb was just as solid as SDSU's game-one starter, Addison Reed. After allowing a pair of one-out singles in the top of the first inning, the freshman righty faced just three over the minimum in his last 7.1 innings of work while improving to 4-3 on the season.
The Aztecs jumped in front 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning on Matt Parker's two-run double before breaking the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning, plating four runs on four hits to extend its lead out to 6-0.
SDSU made it 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Jomel Torres RBI-single up the middle.
The Seahawks made a late push with two outs in the top of the ninth inning off reliever Kegan Sharp. Higgins smoked a double to centerfield before scoring when
Jon Lucas (Jr., Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown) reached via a two-base error. McDonnell cut it to 7-2 with a RBI-double to right center, bringing around Lucas. After junior
Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) reached via an infield single, the Aztecs then were forced to again go to the bullpen. Ryan Wynveen entered and induced a fly out to left for the game's final out.
SDSU pounded out 14 hits, led by Josh Chasse and Brandon Decker, who each went 3-for-4.
Sophomore
Mark Holmes (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) fell to 1-1 with the loss, yielding six runs, five earned, on 10 hits while striking out one over 5.0 innings.
