Hackensack, NJ - Fairleigh Dickinson used a 17-2 run early in the second half en route to a 66-54 victory over Wagner in Northeast Conference (NEC) action at the Rothman Center. With the win, the Knights improve to 7-17 and 3-10 in the NEC while the Seahawks fall to 9-15 and 6-7 in the NEC.
The Green & White were able to hold the NEC's leading scorer Mariyah Laury under double-figures for just the second time all season, limiting her to just seven points while snapping her five-game streak of scoring at least 20 points. Unfortunately, Alyssa Mayrose picked up the slack with a season-high 28 points while Jasmyra Saunders hit for 16 and Alanna Driscoll-Sbar notched 12 points with a game-high 10 rebounds.
Freshman
Marie-Laurence Archambault (Montreal, Quebec / Montmorency) scored the last 14 points of the game for Wagner en route to a team-high 17, on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-6 from outside, in 16 minutes of action. Junior
Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) had nine points and six rebounds while senior
Andrea Reed (Pocomoke City, MD / Pocomoke) recorded eight first-half points.
The Seahawks shot an icy 31.7 percent (20-63) for the game, including 28.1 percent (9-32) in the second half, while connecting on just 18.2 percent (4-22) from beyond the arc. The Knight hit on 40.0 percent (22-55), including 42.1 percent (8-19) from three-point range. The Green & White won the battle of the boards by a 41-38 count, including 17-11 on the offensive end.
FDU scored the first five points of the game, before Wagner countered with a Reed lay-up and a
Megan Mahoney (Jr., Staten Island, NY / St. Peter's) jumper. The Knights responded with a pair of three pointers, opening up an 11-4 lead with just over 15 minutes to play. FDU would extend the lead to 10 points on three more occasions, the last at 31-21 with 2:16 to go in the half. Olsen cut it to eight with a jumper before hitting a three pointer off a nifty pass from Reed. The senior point guard then picked the pocket of Sanders and was fouled at the other end but landed awkwardly and was forced to exit the contest. Mahoney sank both free throws as an injury replacement, cutting the deficit to three at 31-28 with 1:04 to go. Laury responded with a three-point play at the other end, making it 34-28 at the half.
Wagner stayed in the game thanks to a 12-5 advantage in points off turnovers and an 11-6 advantage in fast-break points. FDU built their first-half lead thanks to connecting on 48.3 percent (14-29) from the floor, including 41.7 percent from beyond the arc.
Junior
Stephanie McBride (Mechanicville, NY / Catholic Central) opened the second half with three-straight points while making it a three-point game. The Knights then put the game out of reach, embarking on a 17-2 run over the next 4:44 while pushing the lead out to 51-33 with 12:58 to play. FDU would extend the lead out to 22 points on the way to a 66-54 victory.
Wagner heads to Monmouth on Saturday, February 13. Tip time is slated for 3:00 pm MAC Center.
