GAME HIGHLIGHTS

Staten Island, NY
– Senior guard Megan Mahoney (Staten Island, NY/ St. Peter's) scored a team-high 21 points before fouling out one minute into overtime as Colgate pulled away for an 85-72 win over the Seahawks.

Wagner, which was trying to go 3-0 for the first time since 1985-86, falls to 2-1 on the season while the Raiders improve to 2-3.

The game was tied at 69-69 after regulation and the Seahawks were down 71-69 when Mahoney was whistled for her fifth personal foul with 4:06 to play in the game. Colgate went on to outscore Wagner 14-3 the rest of the way to win going away.

Wagner jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in this contest on a Mahoney three-point jumper and a layup by senior forward Ashley Olsen (Staten Island NY/ Notre Dame Academy). Colgate then got hot from the field, hitting 12 of its first 15 shots, a blistering 80 percent clip, which helped the Red Raiders open a 28-18 lead with 7:22 remaining in the first half. A pair of free throws by Jhazine Lynch, who would go on to lead all scorers with 29 points, with 6:24 to go in the half gave the Red Raiders their biggest lead of the half at 14 (32-18).

Wagner ended the first half with a flourish, outscoring the Red Raiders 8-0 over the final 4:13 to whittle the deficit to 36-30 at intermission. Junior center Kelly Clark (Neptune, NJ/St. Rose) keyed the half-ending run with a pair of layups for the Seahawks. Another key to the Wagner run was Wagner's defense as Colgate hit just three of their final 12 shots of the half. Mahoney kept Wagner in touch with 15 first-half points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.

The teams traded baskets at the outset of the second half and Colgate appeared to be in control with a 50-43 lead with 12:13 to go following a three-point jumper by Candice Green. Wagner countered with a 14-5 run over the next 4:05 with sophomore guard Veronick Fornier (Gatineau, Quebec/Montmorency) capping the run with a three-pointer that gave the Seahawks a 57-55 lead with 8:08 to play. This was Wagner's first lead since the score was 14-12 with 13:06 to go in the first half.

After Colgate's Tricia Oakes tied the game at 57-57 with 7:40 left, Wagner appeared to take control, embarking on a 7-0 run which staked the Seahawks to a 64-57 lead with 4:16 to go. Clark capped the run with a layup and Wagner had all of the momentum at this point.

Undaunted, the scrappy Raiders fought back with an 8-0 run of their own capped by a Lynch layup with 2:18 left to go back on top 65-64. Clark hit a pair of free throws for Wagner with 1:52 left to give Wagner the lead back at 66-65. A layup by Colgate's Tayler Wejnert at the 1:32 mark gave the lead back to the Raiders 67-66. Mahoney then answered with a driving layup at the 1:12 mark to give Wagner a 68-67 lead.

Two free throws by Lynch with 56 ticks left gave the lead back to Colgate yet again. With 24 seconds left in regulation, Clark made one out of two from the line to knot the score at 69-69. When Lynch's layup bounded away with two seconds to go, the teams were headed for overtime which was dominate by the Red Raiders.

Clark and sophomore forward Marie-Laurence Archambault supported Mahoney's 21-point night with 12 points apiece while Olsen chipped in with eight. In addition to Lynch's 29 points, Wejnert also cracked the 20-point barrier, finishing with 21 while Oakes added 10.

The teams shot nearly identical from the field with Colgate hitting 46 percent and Wagner checking in at 44 percent. The Raiders held a sizeable edge at the free throw line, making 22-of-29 while Wagner was 8-of-20 from the charity stripe. Colgate won the battle of the boards, 44-37, and forced Wagner into committing 27 turnovers while turning the ball over 21 times themselves.

Wagner is next in action on Saturday, Nov. 27 when the Seahawks host Albany in a 4:00 pm tip-off.

NOTES – Clark, who entered the game No.1 in the Northeast Conference in shooting percentage at .667, turned in her third straight solid effort. Her season-high 12 points come on the heels of a nine-point outing vs. Army and a 10-point game against Siena. Mahoney shot 75 percent from the field, connecting on 9-of-12 shots. Three Seahawks are averaging in doubles figures with Mahoney leading the way at 16.3 ppg. followed by Archambault at 10.7 and Clark at 10.3. Prior to and during tonight's game, Wagner Athletics teamed up with Project Hospitality and ShopRite for the 2010 Food & Clothing Drive. The program was a rousing success as Wagner collected more than 200 canned goods and new clothing to benefit Project Hospitality. Each fan who donated two canned goods or one piece of new winter clothing received a free ticket to the Colgate game. Those who purchased their canned goods from one of the two ShopRite locations on Staten Island received additional tickets for half off.
