Seahawk Swimming Knocks Off Iona For First Victory

Meet Results

Staten Island, NY –
The Seahawk swimming and diving team won its first dual match of the young season today, defeating the Gaels of Iona College 142.5-119.5 at the Spiro Sports Center Pool.

After tasting silver in the first event, the Seahawks went on a run, earning first place points in the next three events that included Kristiana Kalibat (Princeton, NJ) in the 1000 yard freestyle, Meredith Ketchmark (Plainsboro, NJ) in the 200 free, and Breanne Sweeney (Staten Island, NY) in the 100 yard backstroke. Alexandra Cooney (Port Jervis, NY) and Jakki Guenther (South Hadley, MA) also added second place points for the Seahawks in the 1000 free and 100 backstroke, respectively.

Wagner would flip-flop first and second place points in the next six events, before making another run at three straight event wins. Kalibat and Ketchmark again helped take the 11 points in the 500 yard freestyle and the 100 yard butterfly, while fellow freshman Kelsey Thomas (Hammonton, NJ) won the 200 yard individual medley in a time of 2:16.74.

In Kalibats' 500 free win, and Ketchmark's 100 fly win, the Seahawks went one-two in points, as Cooney again came in second to Kalibat, while Alanna Gibbons (Staten Island, NY) earned a second place in the butterfly.

The Seahawks went the entire 14-event meet without missing out on any first or second place points, as the Green and White earned eight first place wins and 11 second place finishes.

Wagner earned their hard-fought victory over a team who beat them 109-95 almost one year ago to the day.

"This was a nice meet for us,” said head coach Mark Sowa. These guys put a beating on us last year so it was nice to get a win today. What I was most happy with was that we won our close races which were a good adjustment from two weeks ago."

The Green and White will look to keep their momentum moving when they host St. Francis (NY) and Sacred Heart in the teams' first tri meet of the year tomorrow at Spiro Sports Center. The first event of that meet is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
