Staten Island, NY – Long Island shot 57.4 percent from the floor and closed the game out with an 11-2 run en route to a 74-60 victory over Wagner in Northeast Conference (NEC) action at the Spiro Sports Center.
The Blackbirds improve to 9-7 and 3-2 in the NEC while the Seahawks fall to 4-12 and 1-3 in the NEC.
Up four at intermission, Long Island opened up the second stanza with eight-straight points while pushing its lead out to 49-37 with 16:30 to go in the game. Later in the half, the Blackbirds extended the lead out to a game-high 16 at 63-47 at the 8:22 mark.
Wagner would not go away, methodically chipping away at the lead while using an 11-0 run over the next 4:34 to cut the deficit to five at 63-58 with 3:48 to go.
Marie-Laurence Archambault (Fr., Montreal, Quebec / Montmorency) capped the run with a three pointer and scored five points during the spurt. However that would be as close as the Green & White would get as Chelsi Johnson connected on a pair of lay-ups, extending the lead back out to nine at 67-58 with 3:04 to play. Junior Sha'Ron Harrison (Paterson, NJ / John F. Kennedy) momentarily quelled the LIU attack with a lay-up before the Blackbirds closed it out with seven-straight points, on the way to a 74-60 victory.
Connie James led the way with 20 points and 11 rebounds, both game-highs, while Johnson (19 points, 7 rebounds), Ashley Palmer (14 points, 5 rebounds) and Heidi Mothershead (14 points) all also hit for double-figures.
Harrison paced the Green & White with 12 points while Archambault added 11 points, on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Junior
Megan Mahoney (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter's) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Senior
Andrea Reed (Pocomoke City, MD / Pocomoke) also had a solid night with eight assists.
Long Island connected on 57.4 percent (31-54) from the floor while claiming the battle of the boards by a 33-31 count.
Wagner shot a solid 43.3 percent from the floor (26-60), but made just 35.5 percent (11-31) in the second half. The Seahawks stayed in the game thanks to Long Island connecting on just 8-of-21 (38.1 %) from the charity stripe.
The first half was a run-and-gun affair as the Blackbirds a blistering 61.5 percent (16-26) from the floor, including 50.0 percent (4-8) from beyond the arc, while Wagner hit on 51.7 percent (15-29). Long Island held the lead for most of the opening stanza, pushing the Seahawk deficit out to nine on two occasions. Trailing 39-30 with 1:27 to go, the Green & White scored the last five points of the half, making it 39-35 at intermission. Mothershead led all scorers with 12 points, on 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc.
