Baseball Announces Non-Conference Schedule

2009 Wagner MVP Damian Csakai

Staten Island, NY –
2009 Northeast Conference (NEC) Coach of the Year Joe Litterio has announced the non-conference portion of his 2010 season. Wagner will play against top-level teams from the Atlantic Sun, the Big East, the Big South, the Colonial Athletic Association and the Mountain West Conference.

The defending NEC Regular Season champs open up with three games at Winthrop (2/26-2/28) in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The Seahawks have traveled to Winthrop, which came up one game short of the NCAA Tournament last year, in each of the last five years while picking up wins against the Eagles in 2007 and 2008.

The Green & White will descend on Florida for Wagner's annual spring break trip. The Seahawks will start off with a single game at North Florida (3/6) before playing a single game at defending Atlantic Sun Champion Jacksonville (3/7), which won 37 games in 2009. The Green & White will then break for a few days before heading to Daytona Beach for three games at defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion Bethune Cookman (3/10; 3/12-3/13). Last season, the Wildcats won 32 games and took two-of-three in a weekend series from the Miami Hurricanes before concluding the season with a pair of heartbreaking one-run losses to Florida and Jacksonville at the Gainesville Regional. The Seahawks conclude their annual trip with a neutral site game against VCU (3/13).

After returning home, Wagner hits the road for three games at Richmond (3/19-21) and one game at Patriot League runner-up Lafayette (3/24) before opening conference play.

Littered throughout the first month of conference play will be single games at Rutgers (3/30), vs. St. John's (4/7) (30 wins in 2009), at Seton Hall (4/14) and at Saint Peter's (4/20). Taking advantage of a bye weekend in the NEC schedule, the Seahawks will fly west for three games at MWC stalwart San Diego State (4/23-4/25). Former San Diego Padre great and Major League Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn coaches the Aztecs, which won 41 games and advanced to NCAA Regional play a year ago behind the dominant pitching of No. 1 overall pick Steven Strasburg. Both Strasburg and former Wagner hurler Kyle Morrison were selected and signed by the Washington Nationals in the 2009 MLB Draft.

The Green & White will conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule with games against Iona (4/28), at NJIT (5/5) and against NYIT (5/19).

Wagner, which won a program record 31 games a year ago, returns 23 letterwinners, including eight starting position players and five starting pitchers.
