Andrew Bailey's whirlwind opening week in the Major Leagues continued last night when the hard-throwing right-hander collected his first career win in the Oakland Athletics' 6-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Bailey was sent in to face the same three batters he threw against in his first Major League appearance on Monday. The results were again the same as all three failed to reach base safely. Juan Rivera made it aboard via an error only to see Bailey strike out Mike Napoli for his second punch-out of the night while eradicating any chances of Los Angeles adding to its lead.
Nomar Garciaparra tied the game up at 4-4 in the top of the ninth with a RBI single before Mark Ellis and Matt Holliday added RBI singles, giving the A's an insurmountable 6-4 lead.
Oakland closer Brad Ziegler pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth, giving Oakland its second victory of the year.
Bailey is now 1-0 with three strikeouts over 2.0 innings.
