Wagner Drops 13-3 Decision at Mount St. Mary’s in Season Finale

EMMITSBURG, Md. –
Jake Willertz and Cody Lehrer combined for five goals to help Mount St. Mary's earn a spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament after the Mount defeated Wagner College 13-3 in men's lacrosse action on Saturday. 

With the loss, the Seahawks complete the 2009 campaign with a 1-15 overall mark and an 0-8 record in the MAAC. Senior midfielders Evan Shull (Port Jefferson Station, NY/ Comsewogue) and Brian Poissant (Manlius, NY/ Fayetteville-Manlius) and junior long-stick middie Greg Trenti (Skaneateles, NY/ Skaneateles) each scored goals for the Seahawks while local product Brandon Waszak (Frederick, MD), who played at Linganore High School, made his 2009 debut with nine saves in the second half. 

Willertz notched his first collegiate hat trick while Lehrer registered two goals and an assist to propel the Mount (5-8, 5-3 MAAC) to its first MAAC Tournament appearance since 2006. The freshmen duo scored three of the Mountaineers' first five goals to help Mount St. Mary's jump out to a 5-1 advantage after one period. Eric Ososki added a goal and an assist, and Doug Friedman dished out two assists while seniors Brendan Flanagan and Shaun Moran each scored twice. 

Willertz got the scoring started when he scored off a Lehrer feed at 8:41 in the first quarter. Ben Trapp (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) increased the advantage to 2-0 when he found the twine unassisted 40 seconds later. 

Poissant momentarily halted the Mountaineers' offensive attack with an unassisted tally at 5:07, but Mount St. Mary's closed the first quarter with three-straight goals to take a 5-1 margin. After Lehrer notched his first marker of the afternoon unassisted at 4:28, Drew Dunn scored his first goal of the year at 2:12 before Ososki fed Lehrer with eight seconds left in the stanza for a four-goal advantage.
Ososki and Willertz increased the margin with unassisted tallies at 6:25 and 4:36, respectively, in the second quarter to give the Mount a 7-1 lead at halftime. 

Willertz then scored the first goal of the second half off a Sean Brogan assist at 10:18 before Christian Kellett (Audubon, Pa./Malvern Prep) capped a string of seven unanswered tallies with an unassisted goal at 7:34 for a 9-1 advantage in the third quarter. 

After Shull found the back of the net for Wagner at 3:58, the two Mountaineers' seniors each scored the next two markers. Flanagan ended the third quarter scoring off a Freidman assist at 3:22 before Freidman fed Moran at 11:05 in the fourth period. Mike Schwab gave Mount St. Mary's a 12-2 lead when he scored off a Brian Fitzgerald (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) assist at 10:47. 

Trenti answered for Wagner with an unassisted goal at 10:38, but junior Tim Henry hooked up with freshman Dan Molinari at 3:04 in the fourth quarter to cap the Mountaineers' victory. 

T.C. DiBartolo made six saves in the first half while A.J. Schaufler and Allen Frere each played a quarter and made three stops and two stops, respectively. 

NOTES: Siena defeated Providence 8-5 in the afternoon and then Manhattan held on to down Marist 10-9 on Saturday night. The Mountaineers, Providence and Manhattan finished in a three-way tie for second place in the MAAC with a 5-3 conference record, but Mount St. Mary's holds the tiebreaker with both teams after defeating the Friars 7-5 on Apr. 11 and knocking off the Jaspers 12-9 on Mar. 14 to earn the No. 2 seed. The Mountaineers will face third-seed Manhattan on May 1 in Buffalo, N.Y. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
