Hamden, CT – Wagner clipped Quinnipiac 7-6 in the second game of today's doubleheader at Bobcat Field. The Seahawks, who won game one by a 2-0 score, even their record at 13-13 and 4-4 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Bobcats fall to 9-19 and 2-6 in the NEC.
All four games in this weekend's series were decided by two runs or less, including two by just one run, as each squad scored 17 runs. Over the last four years, the teams have gone 8-8 against each other with 14 of the 16 games decided by three runs or less.
Quinnipiac took the early 1-0 lead on Gabe Guerino's second home run of the year, a solo shot to right center, in the bottom of the second.
Wagner answered with a run in the top of the fourth. Sophomore
Joe Jamison (West Caldwell, NJ / James Caldwell) plated senior
Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) with a RBI single to left field.
The Bobcats reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth, pushing a run across on a double play.
The Green & White tied the game in the top of the sixth on another Jamison RBI single, plating Drechsel for the second time.
Sophomore
Jared Gruccio (Landisville, NJ / Buena Regional) singled leading off the seventh. Later with one out, he advanced to third on
Matt Logan's (Wall, NJ / Wall) perfectly executed hit-and-run through the left side. Sophomore
Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) followed with a three-run home run, his second of the year, putting Wagner in front 5-2 while chasing Quinnipiac starter RHP Joe Duffy.
Duffy struck out six, against one walk, while yielding five runs on 10 hits and a walk over 6.1 innings of work.
The Bobcats immediately answered with three runs in the bottom part of the seventh, using four two-out hits.
Wagner went back in front 7-5 in the top of the eighth inning with a pair of runs. Sophomore
Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) led off with a single up the middle. After Martutartus stole second, junior
Damian Csakai (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) drove him around with a RBI single to right center. Csakai then stole second despite a pitch out and came around on Gruccio's second hit of the game, a single up the middle, extending the lead out to 7-6.
The Bobcats would not go down without a fight in the bottom of the ninth. Ben Farina doubled down the left-field line with one out. After moving over to third, Wagner closer RHP
Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) fanned Ryan Ulrich for the second out of the inning. Chris Migani cut the lead to 7-6 with a bloop single to right field. Bryn Doyle followed with a walk, moving the tying run into scoring position. Huebner then put one in the dirt but on the play, pinch runner John Simone made a late break to second and was gunned down by Drechsel for the final out of the game. On the weekend, the senior catcher threw out all four runners that attempted to steal and has gunned down six-of-seven would-be base-stealers over eight NEC games.
Freshman
Mark Holmes (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) picked up his first collegiate win while evening his record at 1-1. The rookie right-hander gave up five runs on 10 hits over 7.0 innings while not walking a batter. Huebner struck out two over 1.1 innings of work while collecting his fifth save of the year.
Anthony Cinelli (0-1) took the loss giving up both runs in the top of the eighth.
Both teams rapped out 14 hits as Martutartus led the way for Wagner, going 3-5. Also standing out was Jamison (2-4; 2 RBI) and Boyd (2-5; 1 HR; 3 RBI).
