Piscataway, NJ – The Wagner College men's lacrosse team fell victim to an athletic and well-schooled Rutgers University team this evening, dropping a 17-1 decision to the Scarlet Knights at Yurcak Field.
The Scarlet Knights, arguably the most talented team Wagner will face all season, are playing their best lacrosse of the season, and have now won three of their last four games, including victories over nationally-ranked Hobart and highly-regarded St. John's.
Rutgers led by a 5-1 count after one quarter and extended the lead to 9-1 at halftime before outscoring the Seahawks 8-0 in the second half. Wagner scored the first goal of the game just 1:12 into the contest as a pair of freshmen attackmen combined on the tally as
Mike Scheerer (West Chester, PA/ Bishop Shanahan) scored off an assist from
Marcus Janda (Schnecksville, PA/ Parkland).
Rutgers answered with a goal by Jeff Rommel 2:55 into the game before Hunter Burnard gave the Scarlet Knights the lead for good 32 seconds later. Kory Kelly paced Rutgers with four goals on the evening while Rommel chipped in with three. With the win, Rutgers, which is a member of the powerful ECAC, improved to 4-6 on the season while the Seahawks fell to 1-9.
Wagner returns to Northeast Conference play on Saturday, April 4 when the Seahawks travel to Loudonville, NY to face the Siena Saints in a 2:00 pm face-off.
