Wagner Drops 12-4 Decision to Providence in MAAC Opener

Bobby Labadini scored six goals and assisted on two others while Colin Tigh added three goals, in leading Providence College to a 12-4 victory over Wagner College.

The Friars, who have now won three straight, improved to 3-4 on the season, 2-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) while the Seahawks fell to 1-7, 0-1 in conference play.

Labadini scored three consecutive goals in the initial 10:53 of tthe contest to give Providence an early 3-0 lead. Danny Ryan then found the cage to give the Friars a 4-0 advantage after one quarter. Wagner midfielder Mike Hurley (Bellerica, MA/ Bellerica), one of the top freshman in the MAAC, then put the Seahawks on the board on a fast-break goal after receiving a pin-point pass on the run from senior defenseman James Okun (Long Valley, NJ/ West Morris Central).

Providence answered by scoring the next six goals of the game, bridging the second and third quarters, in building a commanding 10-1 lead. Seahawk sophomore midfielder Will Macumber (Manorville, NY/ Eastport South Manor) broke the scoring spree with an unassisted goal, on a tremendous individual effort in front of the cage, to make it a 10-2 game with 6:21 left in the third quarter.

Junior midfielder Pete Blackmer (Marcellus, NY/ Marcellus) scored Wagner's third goal of the game off an assist from senior midfielder Brian Poissant (Manilus, NY/ Fayetteville-Manlius). Senior midfielder Michael Schaeffer (Weston, CT/ Weston) registered the Seahawks' final tally of the game, an unassisted goal with 30 seconds remaining in the game.

Statistically, the game was much closer than the final score would indicate. Providence held a slim 32-30 edge in shots, led in ground balls 23-17, and won 10-of-19 face-offs. Robert Bryan recorded 11 saves in goal for the Friars while playing the first 49:42 of the game, before giving way to Jake Goodelman, who then replaced in the waning minutes by Frank Cicero. Providence was 4-of-6 in man-up opportunites while the Seahawks were 0-of-2.

Seahawk freshman goalie Peter Rubin (East Rockaway, NJ/ East Rockaway) was sharp in goal, coming up with nine saves, several of which were blasts from close range.
Wagner is next in action on Saturday, March 28 when the Seahawks host MAAC rival Marist in a 1:00 pm face-off.
