Wagner To Honor 1989 Champs On Saturday

Current assistant coach Maureen Hannafin celebrating circa 1989
Staten Island, NY – Wagner College will honor its 1988-1989 NEC Championship team on Saturday, February 7 during the Seahawks' doubleheader against Saint Francis (PA). The team will be recognized during the under four minute timeout of the men's game, which starts at 4:00 pm, and honored again at halftime of the women's game, which begins at 7:00 pm

The Wagner squad, which was led by current coach Gela Mikalauskas, claimed the first NEC title by a Seahawk team in any sport, highlighted by an impressive season-ending 14-game winning streak. The Green & White went 22-7 while claiming both the regular season and tournament championships. After dropping back-to-back NEC games to FDU and Monmouth, Wagner would not lose again, ripping off 12 straight wins to claim the top seed and home-court advantage in the NEC Tournament. The Seahawks rolled over FDU 63-46 in the semifinals before stopping Robert Morris 66-60 in the title game.

Current assistant coach Maureen Hannafin turned in one of the finest all-around seasons in Wagner history, averaging 17.7 ppg, with 2.7 apg and 2.0 spg while shooting 84.6 percent from the free throw line. For her efforts, she was named the NEC Player of the Year and, 20 years later, remains the only Seahawk to claim the NEC's highest honor in women's basketball

Forward Cynthia Quinlan joined Hannafin on the All-Conference First Team and earned NEC Tournament MVP honors after averaging 14.0 ppg and 15.0 rpg in Wagner's two post-season wins. On the year, she averaged 15.0 ppg and 11.6 rpg.
