About the Seahawks
Wagner is coming off a 1-1 week, posting come-from-behind 72-60 win at Bryant (2/12) thanks to a big second half that featured a 14-3 run and excellent long-range marksmanship from fifth-year senior guard
Joey Mundweiler (Olathe, KS/ Olathe East) and freshman guard
Chris Martin (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township/Apex Academies), who scored 20 and 18 points, respectively. Mundweiler was 6-of-19 from beyond the arc vs. the Bulldogs. The six treys were one shy of the school-record seven three-pointers which he shares while the 19 three-point attempts are a Wagner record.
Martin Continues to Shine
Martin continues to shine offensively for the Seahawks. In Wagner's 72-60 win at Bryant on Feb. 12, the fearless, sharp-shooting guard poured in 18 points off the bench on 6-of-11 shooting, including a sizzling 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. He added one assist and one steal, all in just 15 minutes of playing time. Martin scored seven straight points during the decisive 14-3 Seahawk run that carried Wagner to the come-from-behind win. Together with his eight-point outing at LIU on Feb. 14, Martin averaged 13.0 points for the week, highlighted by 6-of-13 accuracy from three-point range. Martin is No. 1 in the NEC in three-point shooting percentage at .457, having made 37-of-81 from downtown, In the last five games, Martin is the team's leading scorer at 12.2 points on the strength of .481 (15-of-31) accuracy from beyond the arc, including a career-high 20-point outing vs. Saint Francis (PA) on Feb. 7, which was followed by the 18-point splurge at Bryant.
Senior Leadership
Wagner's four senior stalwarts currently average between 9.8 and 12.8 points per game. Mundweiler leads the way at 12.8, followed by fifth-year senior forward
Jamal Smith (Baltimore, MD/ Towson Catholic) (12.4), senior forward Llew Radford (Newport News, VA/ Heritage) (11.6) and fifth-year senior point guard
Justin Drummond (Baltimore, MD/ McDonogh) at 9.8. Drummond is the team-leader in assists (96), steals (41) and blocks (22) and has been the ultra-playmaker of late, following up his career-high 10-assist outing vs. Saint Francis (PA) (Feb. 7) with another 10-assist game at Bryant (2/12). Radford continues to lead the club in rebounding at 7.7 boards per game, which third in the NEC. The 6-4 Radford is ninth in the NEC in shooting percentage at .519.
Moving Up the Charts
Smith is now up to 1,214 points, which is 21st on the Wagner all-time list. He is just four points shy of securing a place in Wagner's all-time top 20 as Bob Mahala, Sr. (1950-42, 55-57) currently sits at No. 20 with 1,217 career points. Along with 571 career rebounds, the versatile Smith is one of just 64 NEC players all-time and eight Seahawks who are members of the 1,000-point/500-rebound fraternity. Mundweiler has now scored 1,173 career points, good for 23rd in Wagner history. The long-range bomber is No. 1 all-time at Wagner in three-pointers made (283) and attempted (786), is No. 1 among active NEC players in both categories and is up to fourth in the NEC's all-time annals in three-pointers made. For the season, Mundweiler is 69-of-186 (.371) from beyond the arc. The 69 three-pointers made are T-10th on the Wagner all-time single-season list while his 2.76 three-pointers made per game rank No. 2 in the NEC and his .376 shooting mark is 15th in the NEC.
New-Look Lineup
The Wagner starting lineup has had a decidedly different look of late with the insertion of redshirt sophomore guard
T.J. Czeski (Amsterdam, NY/ Amsterdam) and physical 6-8, 235-pound sophomore
Clayfell Harris (London, England/ Bridgton Academy). Harris tossed in a career-high six points vs. Saint Francis (PA) (2/7) while Czeski has supplied solid play in the backcourt while averaging 11.4 minutes per outing. Redshirt junior guard
Doug Elwell (Staten Island, NY/ Monsignor Farrell) tallied eight big points off the bench in the win over Bryant (2/12), including an important second-half three-point jumper and his customary assortment of pin-point passes. In a classic “good news, bad news” scenario, Wagner has a pair of home games on tap this week, however, they are against the top two teams in the conference.
