CAPTAIN
Jamal Smith is a bona fide All-NEC candidate and a quiet leader who will serve as team captain for the second straight season. One of the most versatile and complete players in the NEC, Smith is a consistent performer who plays the game with a graceful style. His stoic expression on the floor belies his high intensity level. An extremely consistent and efficient performer, he is always under control on the floor. Solid in all areas of the game, he has courageously battled back from a heart condition that sidelined him for the 2004-05 season. Smith earned his degree in business administration - marketing last May and is now pursing a master’s degree.
2007-08 (R-Junior): Started all 30 of the games he played … Was third on the team in points per game (11.0), overall points (331), field goals made (126), three-pointers made (36), rebounds (162), rebounds per game (5.4), assists (47), steals (33), and blocked shots (10) … His 11.0 ppg were good for 21st in the NEC … Averaged 12.1 ppg in NEC games which ranked him 19th in the conference ... Second on team in minutes played with 1,018 … Averaged 33.93 minutes overall (7th in the NEC) and 36.00 minutes in conference games (6th in the NEC) … His 5.4 rebounds per game ranked him 19th in the NEC … Averaged 2.00 offensive rebounds per game which ranked 15th in the NEC … Shot .368 (25-68) from beyond the arc in conference games which was good for 14th in the NEC … Scored in double figures 20 times … Tallied 15 or more points eight times … Grabbed double-digit rebounds three times including a career-high 13 against Sacred Heart (2/14) … Poured in a season-high 20 points against Fairleigh Dickinson (2/28) … Shot .714 (5-7) from the field in a 12-point effort against St. Francis (NY) (12/8) … Scored 17 points in back-to-back games against NEC opponents, against Central Connecticut St. (1/3) and at Sacred Heart (1/5) … Scored 18 points on 3-4 shooting from behind the arc against Mount St. Mary’s (1/24) … Came up with a season-high four steals at Loyola Marymount (12/22) … Recorded a season-high two blocks against Bucknell (11/24) … Scored double digits in three of the last four games of the season.
2006-07 (R-Sophomore): Started 29 of 30 games averaging 11.7 points and 5.5 rebounds a contest ... Second on the team playing an average of 31.6 minutes a game ... Shot .474 from the field ... Placed second on the team with 37 steals (1.2 pg) ... Played with a 1.2 Assist:Turnover ratio ... Ranked 24th in the conference in scoring and 15th in rebounding ... Grabbed 2.3 offensive rebounds an outing ... Scored at least nine points 23 times ... Racked up a season high 24 points, shooting 11-11 from the foul line and recording four assists at FDU (1/6) ... Secured his first career double-double vs Monmouth (2/8) with 21 points and 10 rebounds (seven offensive) ... Shot 8-9 from the floor and ended with 19 points and seven rebounds at Indiana St. (12/21) ... Ended the night with 20 points vs Mount St. Mary[apos]s (2/22) ... Had a perfect night shooting the ball in a win over LIU (22) hitting 6-6 FGs and 2-2 FTs while scoring 15 points ... Made 74.2 percent from the foul line in NEC play.
2005-06 (R-Freshman): NEC All-Rookie Team ... Averaged 8.0 ppg while starting 22 of 24 games ... Was second on the team and 15th in the NEC shooting 46.5 percent from the field ... In 22.5 minutes he averaged 3.9 rebounds and 1.0 steals a game ... 46 percent of his rebounds were on the offensive end ... Shot .357 from three for the season ... Grabbed 4.6 rpg and shot .473 from the floor in NEC games ... Was named NEC Rookie of the Week (2/20) after averaging 14.0 ppg and 6.0 rpg in games vs CCSU (2/16) and at Quinnipiac (2/18) ... Shot a career best 9-from the foul line on his way to 18 points at Quinnipiac ... Caught fire from three, hitting 4-4 and totaled a career high 25 points in the win at Brown (11/30) ... Broke double digits with 10 points at #12 UCLA ... Scored 14 points and had eight rebounds at Sacred Heart (1/7) .. Was sidelined for the final three games of the season.
2004-05 (Freshman): Named Street & Smith[apos]s NEC Top Newcomer in its 2004-05 college hoops preview... Started each of the first five games before missing the last 25 games due to illness... Averaged 22.4 minutes and 6.0 points per contest... Recorded a 2:1 assist/turnover ratio... Had a season-best points in his collegiate debut at St. John[apos]s (11/20)... Posted 10 points on 5-12 shooting vs Albany (27) ... Grabbed a season-best six rebounds vs Brown (30).
