Emmitsburg, MD – Mount St. Mary's used a 14-3 run over the final 10 minutes to defeat Wagner 55-42 in Northeast Conference (NEC) action at Knott Arena. The Mount snapped a five-game losing streak in improving to 8-12 and 3-7 in the NEC while the Seahawks are now 6-14 and 2-8 in league play.
Senior
Helen Swartley (Staten Island, NY / St. Joseph's Hill) hit a jumper to give the Green & White a 39-38 lead with 10:00 to go. From that point it was all Mountaineers. The Mount limited the Seahawks to just 1-13 shooting (7.7 %) while outrebounding the Green & White 19-6, including 6-1 on the offensive end, leading to the game-changing 14-3 run. Mount St. Mary's also hit on 11-15 (73.3 %) from the charity stripe to put the game away.
For the game, the Seahawks hit on just 28.6 percent (16-56), including just 25.0 percent (4-16) from beyond the arc. The Wagner defense put the clamps on the Mount offense, limiting them to 35.4 percent (17-48), including 13.3 percent (2-15) from long range. The charity stripe was another story as Mount hit on 19-29 (65.5 %) while Wagner hit on just 6-11 (54.5 %), including 1-3 in the second.
Freshmen
Lindsay Corcoran (West Chester, PA / Villa Maria Academy) paced the Green & White with a career-high 13 points, on 4-8 shooting – including 3-7 from long range. Classmate
Kelly Clark (Neptune, NJ / St. Rose) added 10 points, on 4-7 shooting, with three blocks. Junior
Andrea Reed (Pocomoke, MD / Pocomoke City) was held under double-digits for just the fifth time on the year with six points but recorded five rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Mary Dunn notched a double-double with game-highs in points (16) and rebounds (14) to highlight four double-digit scorers for the Mountaineers. Lead Westbrooks also turned in a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Brianna Gauthier and Hassanah Oliver each scored 10 points.
The Seahawks started the game off with a 7-2 run. Corcoran opened the scoring for the second-straight game with a nifty back-door layup before Clark followed with one of her own. After a Westbrooks jumper, Corcoran drilled a triple to complete the Green & White's opening spurt. The Mount would rally to tie the game at 15-15 before John'a Poole (Jr., Middle River, MD / Eastern Tech) knocked down a jumper from the top of the key to make it 17-15. The Mountaineers then ripped off five-straight points to take their first lead of the game at 20-17 with 4:32 remaining. Wagner immediately responded with six-straight points as Corcoran hit a pair from the line before connecting on her second three of the half. Clark completed the 6-0 run with a free throw. Gauthier then answered with pair of three pointers to give the Mount a 23-20 lead at intermission.
Wagner is next in action on Monday, February 2 at 7 pm when the Seahawks host CCSU at the Spiro Sports Center.
