Wagner Drops 63-56 Decision At Albany

Albany raced out to a 23 point second-half lead before holding off a late Wagner rally in a 63-56 victory at SEFCU Arena. The Great Danes improve to 4-4 while the Seahawks fall to 2-7.

The Green & White won the battle of the boards by a 48-43 count but shot 32.3 percent (21-65), including a chilly 26.3 percent (5-19) from beyond the arc. Albany, meanwhile, shot 36.2 percent (21-58), including 36.4 percent (4-11) from deep.

Senior Andrea Reed (Pocomoke City, MD / Pocomoke) led the way with 13 points, on 4-of-9 shooting, with five assists and three steals in 37 minutes of action. Junior Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) matched her career-high with 14 rebounds. Rounding out the top-performers for the Seahawks was sophomore Kanifa Hicks (Paterson, NJ / Passaic County Tech), who had an outstanding game with eight points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench.

In the second half, with Albany up 38-27 with 16:25 remaining the Great Danes went on a 18-6 run over the next 7:37 in jumping out to an insurmountable 56-33 lead. The Seahawks would continue to fight, ending the game with a 19-5 run over the final 6:00 before falling by a 63-56 count.

Albany started quickly, scoring the first four points before sophomore Kelly Clark (Neptune, NJ / St. Rose) scored four-straight points before Reed gave the Wagner their only lead of the game at 6-4 with a lay-up. The Great Danes countered with a 12-2 run, taking a 16-8 lead with 12:05 to go in the first half.

Down 22-15 with 7:18 to play in the first, the Seahawks ripped off seven-straight points, highlighted by a Veronick Fournier (Fr., Gatineau, Quebec / Montmorency) three pointer to tie the score at 22-22 at the five-minute mark. Albany responded with a 12-1 run over the final 5:04 of the first half in taking a 34-23 lead at intermission. During that time Wagner missed all seven shots while turning the ball over three times.

Charity Iromuanya lead the way for the Great Danes with a game-high 17 points. Ebone Henry added 14 points while Julie Forster recorded 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Green & White now break for finals before returning to action on Monday, December 21 at 7:00 pm with a road game at Saint Peter's as junior Megan Mahoney (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter's) will make her debut for the Green & White.
