Lincroft, NJ – The Wagner men's cross country team took third place at the Monmouth University Cross Country Kick-Off, topping Northeast Conference (NEC) foes Monmouth and Long Island University.
The Seahawks top performance of the day came from the endurance of rookie Zachory Spector (Yaphank, NY/Longwood) after battling not only the competition in the five team meet, but also after fighting what Tropical Storm Hanna threw at him in his first collegiate race. Spector finished eighth with a time of 20:04 while finishing third out of the NEC competitors behind Monmouth's Peter Forgach (3rd - 19:30) and Long Island's Dan Renahan (7th – 19:57).
Spector's steps were followed closely by fellow teammates Allen Koehler (Okeana, OH/William Henry Harrison) and Thomas Rammelkamp (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place). Koehler finished three seconds behind Spector with a time of 20:07, good for tenth place while T. Rammelkamp crossed the finish line in 11th place at 20:10.
Following up after his twin brother, Derek Rammelkamp (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) clocked in at 20:17 (15th) while junior James Johnston (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) closed out the top Seahawks' top five finishers with a time of 20:19 (17th), a mere 15 seconds from Spector's top Seahawk time.
Rounding out the rest of the day for the Green & White is graduate student Brian Halling's (Amherst, NH/Souhegan) 22nd place finish in 20:32, freshman Thomas Iannacone (Havertown, PA/St. Joe's Prep) finishing 41st in 21:31, sophomore Brian Doxey (West Islip, NY/West Islip) clocking in 21:37, good for 43rd, and cross country newcomers William Berger and Dylan Moulton's (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy) finishes in 22:38 (49th) and in 23:20 (55th), respectively.
Their defeat of host Monmouth University marks an extremely great start of the 2008 season for the Seahawk men after being were ranked sixth in the NEC preseason poll while Monmouth was ranked second.
The Grymes Hill gang return to the path on September 19 when they take on the competition of the Monmouth Invitational at Holmdel Park in Holmdel, NJ.
