Reed’s Career-High 26 Points Not Enough In 81-59 Loss To Fairfield

Junior Andrea Reed's (Pocomoke City, MD / Pocomoke) scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Wagner Seahawks (4-6) in an 81-59 loss to the Fairfield Stags (6-5) at Leede Arena in the opening game of the Blue Sky Classic hosted by Dartmouth College. The Seahawks move to the consolation bracket and will play the host Big Green tomorrow at 5:00 pm.

Fairfield shot an even 50.0 percent (31-62) for the game - including 54.5 percent (6-11) from beyond the arc – while using an advantage in bench points (29-8) and points off turnovers (22-5). Wagner, meanwhile, hit on a respectable 40.4 percent (23-57) – including 41.7 percent (5-12) from beyond the arc – and held a 24-16 advantage in points in the paint.

Reed was the story for the second time in as many games, breaking her previous career-high of 25 points, set vs. Saint Peter's the last time out. She scored her 26 points on 10-15 shooting – including 3-3 from beyond the arc - with six assists and five rebounds. Over her last two games, she is averaging 25.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg and 5.0 apg while shooting 60.0 percent (15-25) from the floor and 81.8 percent (18-22) from the charity stripe.

Also standing out for the Green & White was freshman Kelly Clark (Neptune, NJ / St. Rose), who matched her career-high with 14 points, on 6-11 shooting. Sophomore Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) paced the squad with seven rebounds while senior Casey Stokes (Hummelstown, PA / Lower Dauphin) added six caroms and four assists.

The Stags jumped out to a 37-22 lead at the intermission thanks to 50.0 percent shooting from the floor, including 3-5 from beyond the arc. Wagner turned the ball over just six times but Fairfield turned those miscues into 10-0 advantage in points off turnovers. The Seahawks stayed in the game thanks to 11 points and three assists from Reed and a 14-4 advantage in points in the paint, as Clark and freshman Brittney Thorpe (Newport News, VA / Heritage) combined for 10 points while patrolling the paint.

Fairfield broke the game open with a 12-1 run to start the second half to go up 23 at 49-26 with 14:48 remaining. Wagner would quickly cut it to 17 with back-to-back triples from Reed and Stokes but could get no closer as the Stags claimed an 81-59 victory.

Baendu Lowenthal matched her career-high with 23 points, on 11-17 shooting, in 26 minutes of action to lead Fairfield while Stephanie Geehan pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds with 11 points for her third double-double of the year.

NOTES:
Reed has now hit for 20 points or more three times in just 10 games and paces the squad with 15.3 ppg, 5.4 rpg and 4.7 apg while registering team-highs in field goal percentage (53.1 %) and free throw percentage (79.3 %) … The Seahawks have lost 16-straight games played during in-season tournaments, last defeating William & Mary on Nov. 27, 1999 at the Lehigh Christmas Classic … Clark's 14 points match her career-high set against NJIT (11/18) … Today's game also marked the return of Olsen, who missed the last two games, and freshman Lindsay Corcoran (West Chester, PA / Villa Maria Academy), who missed the last three games, due to injuries.
