Quinnipiac Defeats Wagner

Wagner was dealt a tough three-set loss by Quinnipiac at the Spiro Sports Center. The Green & White lost by scores of 28-26, 25-16 and 26-24 to the Bobcats.

Wagner is now 3-18 and 1-5 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while Quinnipiac is 4-26 and 1-5 in conference-play.

The Bobcats outhit the Seahawks .172-.138 and were aided by 12 aces, compared to just five for Wagner.

Junior Jess Troiano (Chester, NY / Monroe-Woodbury) led the Seahawk-attack with a season-best nine kills, on blistering .500 hitting, with a match-best five blocks. Freshman Stephanie Robinett (Sugar Land, TX / Dulles) also had nine kills, on .118 hitting. Classmate Izabela Blach (Scotch Plains, NJ / Scotch Plains Fanwood) turned in five kills and four blocks to round out the top performers on offense.

Sophomore Laura Bellotti (Dix Hills, NY / St. Anthony's / Lafayette) had a team-best 26 assists to lead the setting-unit with 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the year. Junior Alex Klein (Cresent Springs, KY / Notre Dame Academy) also had 11 digs, pacing the defense.

The first set was a back-and-forth affair featuring 13 ties and six lead changes. With Wagner in front 10-9 following a Troiano kill, Quinnipiac went on a 5-1 run to assume a 14-11 lead. The Seahawks fought back with four-straight points thanks to stellar serving from Klein to grab a 15-14 lead. Later with the match tied at 21-21, Robinett and Blach notched kills to spark a 3-1 run while putting the Green & White in position to take the first set. However the Bobcats answered with two points on the way to a come-from-behind 28-26 win.

Wagner jumped in front 4-1 in the second before Quinnipiac went on a set-changing 10-0 run. The Seahawks cut the deficit to 16-14 but could not get any closer as the visitors used a 9-2 spurt to close out the win.

The Bobcats led for most of the third set before the Seahawks scored four-straight points to tie it up at 21-21. Quinnipiac then scored three-straight points only to see Wagner answer with three points of its own to even the set up at 24-24. The Bobcats, as they did all match, answered with two points to claim win, 26-24.

Jenna Benigno (11 kills, 11 digs) led the way for Quinnipiac.

The Seahawks host NJIT on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 8:00 pm.
