NJIT Stops Wagner 3-0

Wagner dropped a 3-0 decision to visiting NJIT in non-conference volleyball action earlier tonight at the Spiro Sports Center. The Highlanders won by scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-12 while improving to 17-11 as the Seahawks drop to 3-19.

NJIT out-hit Wagner .292-.124 while only committing 11 attack errors.

Junior Sam O'Brien (San Francisco, CA / Sacred Heart Cathedral) led the Seahawks with nine kills, on .300 hitting, while senior Sarah Garrette (Barrington, IL / Barrington) notched five kills, on .300 hitting, with three blocks. Sophomore Laura Bellotti (Dix Hills, NY / St. Anthony's / Lafayette) paced the setting-unit with 27 assists. Freshman Rebecca Prado (Annandale, NJ / North Hunterdon) turned in a spectacular effort on defense with a match-high 15 digs.

Renata Pandolfo (11 kills), Baaba Hughes (10 kills) and Katrina Hornstein (8 kills) led the way for NJIT.

In the first set with NJIT leading 24-16, Wagner ripped off six-straight points while forcing two NJIT timeouts. However the Highlanders escaped with the 25-22 win on a Wagner attack error. The Seahawks hit .182 and were led by O'Brien, who recorded five kills, on .556 hitting.

NJIT took the second set 25-18, closing the win with five-straight points.

The Highlanders used na 8-0 run with the score tied at 4-4 in the third on the way to an easy 25-12 victory in the third and decisive set.

Wagner is next in action on Sunday when the Seahawks travel to Long Island at 1 pm.
