Seahawks Drop Season Finale To Fairleigh Dickinson 3-1

Wagner concluded its season with a 3-1 loss to Fairleigh Dickinson on senior day at the Spiro Sports Center. Prior to the game the Green & White honored four-year starter and two-time captain Sarah Garrette (Barrington, IL / Barrington).

The Seahawks claimed the first set 25-14 before losing by scores of 25-11, 25-23 and 25-20. Wagner ends its season at 3-21 and 1-7 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while Fairleigh Dickinson is now 16-13 and 3-4 in the NEC.

Fittingly, Garrette turned in the top Wagner-performance with five kills, on .143 hitting, with four blocks and two aces. Junior Alex Klein (Cresent Springs, KY / Notre Dame Academy) and freshman Stephanie Robinett (Sugar Land, TX / Dulles) paced the squad with eight kills apiece. Classmate Rebecca Prado (Annandale, NJ / North Hunterdon) notched a team-best 17 digs while Robinett also recorded 11 digs. Sophomore Laura Bellotti (Dix Hills, NY / St. Anthony's / Lafayette) led the setting-unit with 25 assists.

The service-unit led by NEC-leader Tricia Plummer (Jr., Granite Bay, CA / Del Oro / Sierra) recorded 12 aces, compared to just six by the Knights. Prado had a match-best four while Bellotti, Garrette, Plummer and Robinett each had two.

Fairleigh Dickinson out-hit Wagner .123- (-).034and had 11 blocks, to just four for the Green & White.

The Seahawks absolutely dominated the first set, hitting a smoldering .400 led by Klein who registered four kills. Wagner's defense was also on its game, holding the Knights to just .000 hitting. With score tied at 2-2, the Green & White used a game-changing 16-4 run to go in front 18-6 on the way to an easy 25-14 win.

In the second set, Fairleigh Dickinson ripped off 12-straight points to go up 13-2 on its way to a dominating 25-11 victory.

The Knights appeared on the way to another easy win in the third, leading 10-5. The Seahawks erased those thoughts with an 8-2 run to reclaim the lead at 13-12. However, that would be the last lead for Wagner. With Fairleigh Dickinson up 23-20 the Seahawks clawed back to tie it up at 23-23 before running out of gas and losing 25-23.

Fairleigh Dickinson never trailed in the fourth and final set winning 25-20 while withstanding numerous Wagner rallies.

The Seahawks return 10 student-athletes next year.
