Brooklyn, NY – Long Island handed Wagner a 3-0 loss in Northeast Conference (NEC) volleyball action at the Wellness Center. The Blackbirds won by scores of 25-9, 25-16 and 25-21 in moving to 16-11 and 6-1 in the NEC while the Green & White are now 3-20 and 1-6 in the NEC.
Freshman
Stephanie Robinett (Sugar Land, TX / Dulles) paced the squad with seven kills, on .217 hitting, with four digs and three blocks while freshman
Izabela Blach (Scotch Plains, NJ / Scotch Plains Fanwood) notched four kills, on .182 hitting.
Junior
Alex Klein (Cresent Springs, KY / Notre Dame Academy) stood out on defense with a team-best nine digs while also adding five kills. Sophomore
Laura Bellotti (Dix Hills, NY / St. Anthony's / Lafayette) led the setting-unit with 16 assists.
LIU out-hit Wagner .315-.065 while registering 41 kills, compared to just 22 for the Seahawks.
In the first set, LIU scored the first seven points of the match and never looked back, winning 25-9.
The Blackbirds used a 9-3 run to start the second set on the way to an easy 25-16 win.
Wagner finally got going in the third set and was tied in the early going at 10-10. LIU used a 5-1 run to take a 15-11 lead and appeared to be in cruise control. The Seahawks then ripped off five-straight points to take a 16-15 lead, on the strength of two
Tricia Plummer (Jr., Granite Bay, CA / Del Oro / Sierra) aces. The lead would be short-lived as the Blackbirds responded with three quick points to take an 18-16 lead. Wagner hung tough but in the end LIU was too much, prevailing 25-21. The Green & White hit .200 in the final set, highlighted by Robinett's five kills, on .417 hitting.
Martina Racic (17 kills, .371 hitting) and Svetlana Simic (12 kills, .296 hitting) led the way for LIU
Wagner will conclude its season Saturday, Nov. 15 at 2:00 pm against Fairleigh Dickinson. Senior
Sarah Garrette (Barrington, IL / Barrington) will be honored prior to the match.
