BOX SCORE

Staten Island, NY –
Andrea Reed's (Pocomoke City, MD / Pocomoke) running bank shot in the lane with 2.9 seconds remaining lifted the Wagner Seahawks to a dramatic 59-58 win over the Army Black Knights in the season-opener for both teams tonight at the Spiro Sports Center.

For the 5-4 junior it was a fitting end to a stellar evening. Reed scored a career-high 22 points, including 18 of Wagner's 30 second-half points, with four steals in helping the Green & White to their second-straight season-opening win. She put Wagner on her back midway through the second half, scoring 15 of the Seahawks' final 18 points over the final 9:58.

Trailing 40-34 with 15:23 to go in the game, the Seahawks scored six-straight points to tie the game up at 40-40 with 11:51 remaining. Army quickly reclaimed the lead with a 5-1 run before Reed took over. After draining a free throw, the diminutive point guard hit two-straight shots to give Wagner the lead at 46-45, the first time the Seahawks led since the 10:27 mark of the first half. Alex McGuire hit a pair of free throws to wrestle back the lead for Army before junior John'a Poole (Middle River, MD / Eastern Tech) split a pair to tie it up at 47-47 with 7:06 remaining.

The teams went back and forth over the next several minutes until Wagner opened up its biggest lead of the second half at 57-54 on a fade-away jumper from freshman Kanifa Hicks (Paterson, NJ / Passaic County Tech) with 1:49 remaining. Army would not go away as Erin Anthony's lay-up with 51 seconds to go cut it to 57-56 before the Black Knights reclaimed the lead on Megan Evan's lay-up with 10 seconds remaining. Head coach Gela Mikalauskas then called timeout with eight seconds remaining and called for a clear out for Reed, who calmly hit the game-winner.

In the first half, both teams shot the lights out with Army hitting on 51.9 percent (14-27) and Wagner an even 50.0 percent (13-26). The Black Knights raced out to a 35-29 halftime lead thanks to a 12-2 run midway through the opening stanza.

Seven other Seahawks hit the scoring column led by Hicks and Poole, who each netted seven. Freshman Kelly Clark (Neptune, NJ / St. Rose) also had a solid game with a team-best five rebounds, four blocks and four points in her collegiate-debut.

Erin Anthony led four double-digit scorers for the Black Knights with 14 points. She also pulled down a team-best five caroms with three blocks.

Notes: The Black Knights out-shot the Seahawks (46.9 % - 43.1 %) and trailed by six at the half … Last season, Wagner went just 1-18 when trailing at the half and 0-17 when the opposition shot better … Despite being outrebounded 35-24, the Green & White outscored Army 32-26 in the paint … Reed's previous career-high was 19 points, set at Iona on Dec. 17, 2006 … Wagner has now won three-straight home openers and is 25-14 all-time ... The Seahawks will look to go 2-0 for the second-straight year when Wagner hosts NJIT on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7:00 pm.
