STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner College field hockey team fell to Big East member Temple by a score of 2-1 at the Field Hockey Complex on Sunday afternoon.
After a scoreless first quarter, Temple and Wagner scored 90 seconds of each other in the second. Early in the frame, the Seahawks (0-4, 0-0 NEC) found the back of the cage off of a redirect from senior Victoria Gonzalez-Lopez, who scored for the second consecutive game. Senior Floortje Leunisse earned her second assist of the season on the goal.
Six minutes later, Temple's Lucia Magro scored her second, and eventual game-winning goal, off of a penalty stroke opportunity.
Heading into the half, the Owls (2-2, 0-0 Big East) held a 2-1 advantage.
During a scoreless second half, freshman goalkeeper Miley Brezgel recorded five of her nine saves, including four in the third quarter. For Brezgel, Sunday's game marked the first start of her collegiate career. In 57:31 in the cage, the Herndon, Pennsylvania native earned nine saves, facing 11 shots on target.
The Seahawks attempted six of their eight penalty corners in the second half of the game. The Owls attempted four penalty corners during the match's entirety.
As a team, Temple took 15 shots with 11 on target. Wagner took 12 shots with six being placed on target.
