STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner College field hockey team defeated New Haven by a score of 8-0 on Friday afternoon.
Prior to the game, the graduating class of 2026 — Claire Evans, Floortje Leunisse, Victoria Bruno, Lauren Frye, Feli Herrero-Martel, Victoria Gonzalez-Lopez, and Erin Maher — were recognized for their tenures while a Seahawk.
During the game, the Seahawks (9-7, 8-0 NEC) scored quickly and often, finishing the first quarter with a 3-0 lead. Herrero-Martel found the back of the cage less than two minutes into the game and Wagner never looked back. At the half, the Seahawks led, 5-0.
As a team, six different Seahawks scored the eight goals, with Leunisse scoring her third hat-trick of the season. Leunisse, Herrero-Martel, Gonzalez-Lopez, junior Romy Matthies, sophomore Julia de Leeuw, and sophomore Juliana Gonzales all found the back of the cage against the Chargers (2-15, 1-7 NEC).
Senior Mia DiGenova and Maher split duties in goal, with Maher recording the lone save in the fourth period for the Green & White, ensuring the shutout on a New Haven breakaway opportunity.
After 60 minutes of action, the Seahawks prevailed, 8-0. Eight goals marks the second most in one game during the 2026 season, following Wagner's 9-0 win at Merrimack earlier in October.
The Seahawks attempted 22 shots with 14 on target with seven penalty corners; meanwhile, the Chargers took two shots with one on frame, and did earn three corners.
With an 8-0 conference record, Wagner earns its second outright NEC regular season title, and the program's first since 2024. The Seahawks have been NEC regular season champions three times in its eight season program history.
Next up, the top-seeded Seahawks host the semifinal round of the NEC Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 5 as Wagner takes on the fourth-seeded Rider Broncs. Start time is set for 11:00 a.m. at the Wagner College Field Hockey Complex.
