Box Score STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner softball team lost the final game of their three-game set with CCSU, falling two games back of the Blue Devils in the NEC standings.

Unlike the last two games, where each team waited until their last turn at bat to score, CCSU jumped in front early with a two-out RBI single in the top of the first. Then in the third inning, the Blue Devils put the lead-off runner aboard with a dropped third strike to start the third inning, who would come around to score with another RBI single. This gave CCSU a 2-0 lead, which expanded to 4-0 the very next inning after two more RBI singles. 

Freshman pitcher Samantha Lotus entered the game in the fifth inning and pitched three scoreless frames in relief to keep the Seahawks close. And while they got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to senior shortstop Payton Janicki's RBI base hit, that's all the offense would muster. Wagner brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the seventh inning, but they couldn't score, and the game ended 4-1 in favor of the Blue Devils.

Janicki and junior third baseman Sydnie Trujillo each finished the series with four hits, while Lotus pitched 10 innings in the series, allowing only one run and striking out seven in two appearances.

With the loss, Wagner remains in third place in the NEC standings, two games ahead of Le Moyne, who holds the final playoff spot. 

The Seahawks will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 4, as they will start a three-game series against NEC-leading LIU with a doubleheader. The first game will start at 1 p.m. and the second game will start at approximately 3 p.m.
