GLEN COVE, N.Y. — The Wagner College men's golf team competed at the LIU Shark Invitational, held April 13-14 at Nassau Country Club, finishing 15th overall in a 15-team field.
In the opening round, senior
Alavid Melo Iturralde led the Seahawks with a 73 (+3), highlighted by three birdies on holes two, four, and 10. Freshman
Guillermo Ochoa Valencia followed with a 75 (+5), carding a birdie on the opening hole. Senior
Renato Gerena added a 78 (+8) with back-to-back birdies on holes two and three, while sophomore
Daniel Cassidy rounded out the scoring with a 79 (+9), highlighted by a birdie on hole 15.
Wagner showed improvement in round two, led by Cassidy's 71 (+1), the team's lowest round of the tournament. The sophomore recorded four birdies on holes one, three, nine, and 14 in a strong all-around performance. Melo Iturralde posted a 75 (+5) with four birdies of his own, while freshman
Cooper Joyce added a 75 (+5), carding birdies on holes three and seven. Ochoa Valencia finished the round with an 81 (+11), highlighted by a birdie on hole four.
In the final round, Ochoa Valencia paced the Seahawks with a 72 (+2), recording a birdie on hole 14. Cassidy followed with a 76 (+6), notching birdies on holes four and five, while Melo Iturralde and Joyce each carded rounds of 77 (+7). Melo Iturralde's lone birdie came on hole 9, while Joyce recorded birdies on holes five and 12.
"Disappointing event for us," said head coach
Frank Gargano. "But this served as a great dress rehearsal for conferences. I'm confident our guys will come out ready to compete next week in Maryland."
The Seahawks will look to come back as they prepare for the NEC Championship, set for April 24-26 at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, Maryland.
