STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner softball team dropped two close games in their doubleheader against Siena on Wednesday.
In the first game, both pitchers held their opponents scoreless through two innings. This changed when the Saints sent a solo home run over the left field fence in the third inning, in what would become the winning run for Siena.
Despite giving up the home run, freshman pitcher
Samantha Lotus pitched well through six innings, picking up eight strikeouts and only walking two. The Wagner bats fell silent however, and the Saints took a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning, where they would tack on one more run on an RBI base hit. The Seahawks went down in order, as they lost the first game 2-0.
The second game started similarly, with both defenses keeping the other side scoreless through the first three innings of play. This time, it was senior
Natalie Rodriguez who kept Siena off the scoreboard by only allowing one base runner through her three innings pitched.
The Saints broke through in the fourth with a sacrifice fly, and that run remained unanswered until the bottom of the sixth. After senior shortstop
Payton Janicki led off the inning with a double, junior third baseman
Sydnie Trujillo cashed in with an RBI single. She would reach third base as the lead run later in the inning, but the Seahawks couldn't bring her home.
The game was tied 1-1 in the seventh, until the Saints scored on a two-out RBI base hit. And despite getting the winning run on base in the bottom half of the frame, Wagner stranded the runners and lost 2-1.
The Seahawks return to the diamond on Saturday, March 21, when they travel to Erie, PA and take on Mercyhurst for a doubleheader. The first game will start at 1 p.m. and the second game will start at approximately 3 p.m.
