Softball Splits Doubleheader with Stonehill; Starts 1-1 in NEC

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner softball team split their doubleheader against NEC opponent Stonehill on Saturday. The Seahawks dropped the first game 15-4 in five innings, then bounced back and won the second game 13-4 in six innings.

The Skyhawks got the scoring started early in the first game of the twin bill, when they plated five runs in the bottom of the first. Each team scored a run in the second inning, making the score 6-1 after two frames.

Wagner then scored three runs in the third to cut their deficit to 6-4. Back-to-back RBI hits from senior shortstop Payton Janicki and junior third baseman Sydnie Trujillo put the Seahawks within two, but Stonehill answered with a pair of RBI hits of its own in the bottom of the inning, giving it a 9-4 lead.

A six-run, seven-hit fourth inning put Stonehill ahead for good, as Wagner went down 1-2-3 and lost 15-4.

In the second game, Trujillo struck again with another two-RBI hit, giving Wagner the early 2-0 lead. Junior designated player Alayna Giampolo collected an RBI in the inning, rounding out a three-run first inning for the Seahawks. Each team scored a run in the next two half innings, before Stonehill scored three more runs in the bottom of the second, tying the game at four.

After two scoreless innings, the Wagner offense exploded for nine runs in the final two frames, capped off by sophomore left fielder Lilly Banse's two-run home run in the sixth. She finished the game with four RBIs, Giampolo and Trujillo each tacked on three RBIs of their own, and the Seahawks evened the weekend series with a 13-4 victory.

Junior starting pitcher Karson Zavala pitched all six innings in the win, striking out six batters while only giving up five hits.

The Seahawks will return to the diamond for the rubber game of the series on Sunday, March 16. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at the CSI Softball Complex.
