BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Wagner fencing teams wrapped up the truncated Shark Showdown at the Steinberg Wellness Center on Sunday. Both the men's and women's teams defeated LIU and lost to NYU at the tournament.
On the women's side, the sabres had the best day. In the first round against LIU, the Seahawks swept the Sharks in sabre, helping the team win 20-7 against the hosts. In the next round against NYU, the sabres came in clutch again, winning six of the nine bouts, though they would ultimately drop that match 15-12. Junior
Morrigan Adams led the way with four bout wins, the most among Wagner sabrists.
Meanwhile, on the men's side, the foils took charge in the match against LIU. They took eight straight bouts after dropping the first one, which helped pushed the Seahawks to a 15-12 win. Then in the next round against NYU, the epees and the sabres kept Wagner in the match. Senior sabrist
Noah Beitel won all three of his bouts against the Violets
Other notable performances included junior foilist
Renata Ziganova and sophomore epeeist
Daniel Ojeda Buitrago, who each picked up a team-leading five bout wins. Additionally, freshman sabrist
Sydney Brock switched weapons and competed with the epees, marking the first time a Wagner fencer
