Women's Basketball Secures Home Win Over Saint Francis

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner College women's basketball team took down the Saint Francis Red Flash by a score of 58-51 at the Spiro Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks (12-14, 8-7 NEC) started the game on an 8-2 run and held a 19-12 lead after the first quarter. 

Wagner extended its lead to eight after the second quarter, leading 32-24. Senior Irene Fernandez de Caleya led the Seahawks offensive attack up to that point with nine points and five rebounds. Redshirt junior Klea Kaci nailed two three-point field goals in the first half for her six points. 

Defensively, Wagner held Saint Francis (2-24, 2-13 NEC) to 8-30 (26.7%) from the field after two quarters.

In the third quarter, the Red Flash chipped away at the Seahawks' lead and eventually led by one point with 2:11 remaining in the third. 

Wagner responded with an 8-0 run to conclude the third quarter with a 45-38 lead. 

In an even final period, the two teams traded baskets back-and-forth as the Red Flash could not gain any momentum on the Seahawks' lead. Kaci scored seven points in the quarter as junior Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor scored six points and grabbed six rebounds during the frame.

Modesayor finished the game with 13 points, nine rebounds, and two steals. Kaci finished with 13 and a team-high four assists. Fernandez de Caleya finished with 11 points and nine rebounds. 

As a team, the Seahawks outscored the Red Flash 23-13 in points off turnovers, 28-18 in points in the paint, and 17-4 in fast break points. Saint Francis grabbed 19 offensive rebounds to Wagner's 12.

Next up, the Green & White travel to NEC newcomer New Haven for a 6 p.m. tip-off at The Hazell on Thursday, Feb. 26.
