LOWELL, Mass. — The Wagner College men's lacrosse team suffered a 16-7 loss to America East member UMass Lowell at Cushing Field on Saturday.
The Seahawks (0-4, 0-0 NEC) tied the game, 2-2, with less than one minute remaining in the first quarter. Freshman Dylan Popehn scored his sixth goal of the season to get the ball rolling for Wagner, followed by senior Max Frissora who found the back of the net late in the frame.
UMass Lowell (2-2, 0-0 America East) tacked on one more goal in the first quarter to take a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes of action.
In the second quarter, both teams scored two goals. For Wagner, freshman Brendan Rosato and senior Smith Callaghan connected to bring the game to a 4-4 tie with 4:35 left in the second quarter. One more River Hawks goal in the second made it a 5-4 game at halftime.
Frissora began the second half with his second goal of the game to make it 5-5 less than two minutes into the frame. Wagner and UMass Lowell would go back-and-forth as senior Jake Mitchell made it a 6-6 game with 9:35 left in the third.
UMass Lowell responded with a 10-0 run from 5:49 in the third to 1:09 in the fourth when sophomore Damon Clark scored his first goal as a member of the Seahawks to make it a 16-7 game in favor of the River Hawks.
Defensively, senior Drew Pemrick picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Sophomore Cole Yoshioka scooped up two ground balls and caused two River Hawks miscues. Sophomore Declan Gillen earned two caused turnovers as well.
In net, junior Angus Snow and sophomore Ryan Cunningham split duties for the Seahawks. Snow recorded 12 saves in 45 minutes while Cunningham rejected one shot in 15 minutes.
As a team, Wagner took 24 shots with 17 on target while UMass Lowell attempted 38 shots with 26 on net.
Next up, the Green & White travel to CAA member Hampton for an 11 a.m. start on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Armstrong Stadium.
