STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner fencing teams have released their schedules, head coach
David Sierra announced on Wednesday. This season will be the first for the Green & White in the newly-formed East Coast Fencing Conference.
Similar to last year, the Seahawks will begin the season at the Coach Nikki Franke Classic hosted by Temple. The women's team will compete on Saturday, Oct. 24, and the men's team will compete the next day. Last season, senior sabrist
Flavio Vinci earned the gold medal as the winner of the men's sabre bracket, and junior sabrist
Villo Nyiri placed third in the women's sabre bracket, claiming the bronze medal.
The Green & White start the month of November by taking part at the NYU Invitational on Sunday, Nov. 1 at the Paulson Center in New York. Then they travel to Madison, N.J. for the Drew Invitational at the Simon Forum. The Seahawks picked up eight total team wins at the Drew Invitational last season, including wins for both teams against LIU and Detroit Mercy. After a week-long break, Wagner will participate in the Vassar Invitational at the Walker Field House on Sunday, Nov. 22.
Wagner will host the Seahawk Challenge on Sunday, Dec. 6 at the Spiro Sports Center. The first of two home meets for the Seahawks will see them take on Hunter and Yeshiva.
After the calendar turns to the new year, the Seahawks will take on both Princeton and NJIT at the Jadwin Gymnasium in Princeton, New Jersey on Wednesday, Jan. 13. Later that week, they'll take their second trip to Philadelphia, as they participate in the Dave Micahnik Penn Invitational from Saturday Jan. 16 to Sunday, Jan. 17.
Wagner will take one more trip in January, when they travel to University Park, Pennsylvania and compete at the Penn State invitational. Last season, the Seahawks were not able to participate in the invitational due to inclement weather. To wrap up the regular season, the Seahawks will host their annual Brian Palestis Memorial Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 31.
The East Coast Fencing Conference will host its inaugural conference championships at Drew's Simon Forum on Sunday, Feb. 28. The Seahawks will join Haverford, Johns Hopkins, NJIT, Stevens, and host Drew as members of the ECFC.
The Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals will be hosted by UNC in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on Saturday, Mar. 13, and the NC Fencing Championships will be hosted by Duke at the Cameron Indoor Stadium from Thursday, Mar. 25 to Sunday, Mar. 28. Last season, Vinci became the first fencer in Wagner's history to earn All-American honors when he finished 12th in the men's sabre competition.
