Women’s Basketball Welcomes New Haven on Saturday

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. –
The Wagner College women's basketball team hosts NEC newcomers New Haven for a 2:00 p.m. tip at the Spiro Sports Center on Saturday, Jan. 16. 

Wagner (6-10, 2-3 NEC) dropped its home matchup against FDU, 56-46, on Thursday to fall to 2-3 in the conference. Against the Knights, Wagner held a 32-30 lead after three quarters of play, but were outscored 26-14 in the final period to lose by 10.

Junior Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor led the Seahawks offensive attack with 14 points followed by redshirt senior Priscila Varela who scored all 13 of her points in the first three quarters. 

Wagner shot 15-44 (34.1%) from the field while FDU shot 18-49 (36.7%); concurrently, the Seahawks shot a season-best 15-17 (88.2%) from the free throw line while the Knights shot 15-16 (93.8%) from the charity stripe in the game.

Since the start of conference play, the Seahawks rank atop the NEC in steals per game with 9.1 and second in the conference in opponent three-point percentage allowing teams to shoot 28.3% from deep. 

Since the start of the new year, Foz ranks second in steals per game within the NEC at 2.1 steals per contest. Senior Hawa Balde-Camara sits third in the conference in blocks per game with 1.0. Both Foz and Balde-Camara ended last season in first place in their respective categories. 

The Seahawks were picked to finish seventh in the conference's preseason coaches poll.

A win on Saturday would improve Wagner's conference mark to .500%. 

New Haven (5-11, 3-2 NEC) took down Chicago State by a score of 63-56 on Thursday night the last time out for the Chargers. Debbie Buff runs the helm of the New Haven coaching staff and is in her seventh season with the Chargers.

Senior Lindsey Hogan leads the Chargers' offense averaging 13.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Fellow senior Aniya McDonald-Perry chips in 11.94 points and a team-best 8.1 rebounds. 

Among the NEC, the Chargers rank first in combined opponent rebounds (31.3), team offensive rebounds (15.1), and second in assists per game (14.13). New Haven was picked ninth in the NEC preseason coaches poll.

After taking on New Haven, the Seahawks welcome the Le Moyne Dolphins to the Spiro Sports Center for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off on Thursday, Jan. 22.
