Baseball Prepped For NEC Tournament Berth As No. 2 Seed

Wappingers Falls, NY — Wagner is prepped and ready for the Northeast Conference Tournament, taking on No. 3 CCSU on Thursday, May 22 as the tournament's No. 2 seed.

Wagner's opener will have a 4 p.m. EST first pitch Thursday, with the game airing on ESPN+.

Scouting the Bracket

Wagner's opening opponent will be the CCSU Blue Devils, who the Seahawks hosted for the first NEC series in the month of May. Starting with a doubleheader on May 2, Wagner won the opener 15-1 in seven innings, dropping game two 7-3 to split the day. On May 3, Wagner took home an 8-6 win to take the series against the then-leader of the NEC.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 LIU takes on No. 4 Stonehill. Wagner hosted LIU mid-March, dropping the opener of a March 14 doubleheader 6-4 before recovering to take a 3-2 win in the second game of the day. LIU took a 9-3 win in game three to hand the Seahawks their first conference series loss of the season, just one of two total.

The Seahawks also hosted the fourth-seeded Skyhawks, sweeping the weekend in late March with 8-2, 8-3 and 4-2 wins.

Last Weekend Out

To close out the regular season, Wagner hosted Delaware State in what was ultimately the Seahawks' fifth conference series sweep of the season.

The offense exploded, scoring 55 total runs across the weekend, including 26 in game three to establish a new single-game program record.

All-Conference Nods

The NEC announced its all-conference teams on Wednesday, with Wagner earning five spots across first and second team. Senior right fielder Bryce Phelps and senior pitcher Jake Toporek earned first-team honors, joined by centerfielder Lukas Torres, designated hitter Joseph Mennella and second baseman Matt Sutera representing the Seahawks on the second team.

Phelps posted a .404 average through the 2025 season with 46 hits and 27 runs scored in NEC play. Toporek finishes his senior season with a 3.29 ERA, logging 82 innings pitched and an 8-0 record.

Torres batted .344 this season with 66 hits, 46 runs scored, 38 RBIs and 29 walks. Mennella was .290 through conference play, finishing the full regular season with 12 home runs and 45 RBIs. Sutera was batting .340 in NEC play with 33 hits and 30 RBIs, earning NEC Rookie of the Week honors four times this season.

Season in Review

Wagner finished its regular season 30-20, sitting at 23-7 in conference with a .767 win percentage that secured the No. 2 seed in the tournament with two games left. The Seahawks closed out the season on a four-game win streak, sweeping five of ten conference series.

Phelps led all Seahawks in three categories with a .404 average, 47 runs scored and 72 hits. Mennella's 12 home runs, 45 RBIs and .571 slugging led the team in their respective categories. Sophomore Connor Roche led the team in doubles with 16, followed just behind by junior Nicholas Mazzotta with 15. Sophomore Diego Tavarez led the team with three triples and 40 walks.

2024 Tournament

Wagner took an early exit in the 2024 NEC Tournament, eliminated in a 6-3 loss to No. 3 Merrimack in the team's last season in the NEC. It was the same score in the first game, a 6-3 loss to No. 2 seed LIU on day one of the tournament. LIU went on to win the tournament, taking down No. 1 Sacred Heart in an 11-6 win.
