New Rochelle, NY — Wagner took a 9-2 win on Wednesday night at Iona in a game that puts the Seahawks at 2-0 against the Gaels this season.
The Wagner pitching staff held up well, with seven arms allowing six hits and two runs, walking only three Iona batters.
Graduate senior Vincent Corso got his first start of the season, going 2.0 innings and giving up two runs in the first frame before starting what would become an eight-inning stretch where the Wagner staff held the Gaels scoreless. Next up, senior Sam Bonilla threw an inning that gave him the win for the game, putting his record at 1-1 this season.
Freshman William Grayson, junior A.J. Hiestand, sophomore Christopher Collina, junior Andrew Ravelo and senior Zach Gorman combined for the last 6.0 innings, allowing three hits and no runs. Iona was held to those two runs on six hits, working just three walks.
The Seahawks were able to get on the board early against Iona starter Danny Onorato, adding six runs during his 3.0 innings pitched.
It was an early offensive push, with Wagner putting up four runs in the second and two more in the third.
A two-RBI double from senior Mateo Matthews got the Seahawks on the board, tying the game at 2-2 after the Gaels put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. From there, senior Lukas Torres pushed a run across with a ground out to second and junior Nicholas Mazzotta singled to score the fourth run of the inning. Mazzotta finished the game with three hits.
With a 4-2 lead in the third, senior Xavier Ulrich sent a triple to left centerfield, scoring two runs to make it a 6-2 lead. An RBI single from Joseph Mennella in the fourth made it 7-2 as the Seahawks' pitching settled in.
Two more runs were tacked on, one in the sixth and one in the seventh. With the 9-2 win, Wagner finished with 10 hits and seven walks. Sophomores Diego Tavarez, Joseph Mennella and Connor Roche had a hit and a walk each. Freshman Matt Sutera didn't have a hit in the game, instead walking three times to finish with two runs scored.
Next up, the Seahawks have a break from Northeast Conference play as they play a weekend series at nearby NJIT. Game one of the series will be Friday, April 11 at 7 p.m. EST.
