Easton, Penn. — Wagner took a close loss in its first midweek in two weeks, dropping 14-13 on the road at Lafayette.
Coming off a weekend sweep of UMES, the Seahawk bats were hot and that did not stop on Tuesday, but a late offensive explosion from the Leopards was enough to secure the win.
Scoring in five consecutive innings starting in the third, Wagner started with an RBI single from graduate Lukas Torres, then added two more in the fourth on hits from graduate Xavier Ulrich and sophomore Connor Roche. That pair of hits had the Seahawks trailing 5-4 in the middle of the fourth after Lafayette had a four-run third inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Leopards tacked on four more and the two teams exchanged runs for the next three frames with Lafayette leading throughout, but Wagner had life in the eighth. Ulrich had an RBI double to right center, then senior Mateo Matthews hit a three-run home run to give the Seahawks the lead for the first time. Up 13-11, the Leopards were not done hitting and added three runs in the bottom of the eighth to ultimately take the win.
The Seahawks finished with 13 hits, led by Roche, who had a 3-of-5, two-RBI day. Torres and Ulrich both had two hits and two RBIs, while Matthews finished 2-of-5 with five RBIs.
Sophomore Joseph Mennella had one hit and worked three walks. Senior Bryce Phelps remained steady after moving up to hit third in the order over the weekend, 2-of-4 on Tuesday with three runs scored and a pair of walks.
Starter Christopher Collina, freshman Frankie Nardo and senior Michael Cunningham each gave up zero hits, with Collina and Cunningham holding the Leopards off the board.
Next up, the Seahawks have a road Northeast Conference series at Mercyhurst. Ga,e one is scheduled for Friday, April 25 at 3 p.m. EST. The Lakers are 8-13 in NEC play after going 1-2 at FDU over the weekend.
