Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College softball team dropped the final game of its weekend series against NEC opponent Long Island University, falling 6-2 on Sunday.
Before the game, we took the time to acknowledge seniors Justine Carranza, Kate Wolf and junior Emma Crosby as they will be graduating in the spring of 2025. They were honored for their accomplishments and dedication to their collegiate careers during their time on Grymes Hill.
LIU got off to a quick start, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. The Seahawks answered in the bottom of the second, putting up two runs of their own to even the score. Sophomore Leilani Gonzales got things started with a single to right field, driving in freshman Taylor Reynolds for Wagner's first run. Later in the inning, junior Payton Janicki singled to left, advancing freshman Alayna Giampolo to second and freshman Sam Estrada to third. Gonzales crossed the plate on the play, tying the game at 2-2.
The game remained tied until the top of the fifth, when the Sharks put together a four run inning to retake the lead, 6-2. Wagner looked to rally but couldn't capitalize on its opportunities down the stretch.
Sophomore Karson Zavala got the start in the circle for the Seahawks, pitching four innings while allowing two hits, two runs, three walks, and recording two strikeouts. Junior Natalie
Rodriguez came on in relief, pitching three innings and giving up five hits, four runs, and notching two strikeouts.
