Baseball Splits Two-Game Weekend At NJIT

Newark, NJ — Playing just one half of what had been rescheduled to be a doubleheader, Wagner took a 7-2 win over NJIT on Saturday to split a two-game weekend against the Highlanders.

On a rainy afternoon, the Seahawks put up seven runs on 11 hits while holding NJIT scoreless for seven innings before the Highlanders put up a pair of runs in the eighth.

Five of NJIT's eight hits came from the top three hitters in the order, while Wagner was able to disperse its hits across seven batters. The Seahawk batters also worked nine walks.

Junior Colin Trizuto started the game and holds a 2-2 record this season after earning the win, going 5.0 hitless innings and allowing just four hits. Juniors Justin Roitman and Heitaro Hayashi took the middle innings before Nicholas Mazzotta closed the game in the ninth.

Starting at shortstop with logging three hits and two RBIs, Mazzotta singled in the top of the eighth and was standing on first when the third out was recorded, heading straight to the mound. He struck out the first two NJIT batters he faced before inducing a fly out that ended the game.

Mazzotta's three hits were the most of any Seahawk, but sophomore Diego Tavarez and freshman Matt Sutera each had a multi-hit game. Senior Jeremy Delamota and sophomore Leo Doyle each walked three times.

Senior Lukas Torres got Wagner on the board with a sacrifice fly in the second with a seven-pitch at-bat that ultimately scored Sutera. Mazzotta had a two-RBI single in the fourth to push the lead to 3-0, then Tavarez added a two-RBI double to make it 5-0. Delamota sent a monster home run to right center field, scoring two more runs and pushing Wagner's lead to 7-0.

With the non-conference weekend wrapped up, the Seahawks will return home to SIUH Community Park next weekend for a Northeast Conference series against UMES. Game one will be Thursday, April 17 at 3 p.m. EST.
