Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College softball team secured a 5-2 victory at home against Delaware State on Saturday, March 7.
Delaware State took an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. The Seahawks responded in the bottom of the inning. With freshman Taylor Reynolds on first, freshman Emma Rocha on second, and junior Geanice Morales on third, freshman Lilly Banse stepped up to the plate. Banse singled, driving Morales home to put Wagner on the board.
In the second inning, freshman Alayna Giampolo blasted a home run to tie the game at 2-2. The Seahawks continued their momentum in the third. With sophomore Brityn Buchanan on first and Banse on third, sophomore Leilani Gonzales hit a double to right field, scoring Banse and advancing Buchanan to third. On the next play, Giampolo singled to right, bringing Gonzales and Buchanan across the plate to give Wagner a 5-2 lead.
In the circle, sophomore Karson Zavala was dominant, pitching a complete game. Zavala allowed just three hits, gave up two runs, and struck out 16 batters to secure the win.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Sunday, March 18, for a doubleheader against Delaware State. Game one is set to begin at 11 a.m.
