Rock Hill, SC — The Seahawks were swept by Winthrop on Sunday when the Eagles took a 10-2 win to close out the series.
Wagner was able to get going early, scoring a run in the top of the first inning when an RBI-single from junior Nicholas Mazzotta scored senior Lukas Torres from second after he hit a lead-off single.
From there, Winthrop scored seven unanswered until the Seahawks got back on the board with another single run in the top of the sixth, but the Eagles answered in the bottom of the frame with three more runs of their own.
The Seahawks were making contact, with 10 hits to the Eagles' seven, but left 10 runners stranded in the process.
Senior Mateo Matthews had a big day, with a home run to right field in the top of the sixth inning. Senior Bryce Phelps did what he does and went 1-of-2 on the day, working two walks.
Senior Lukas Torres and junior Nicholas Mazzotta are putting up duplicate numbers from the one and two spot in the order, both going 1-of-5 at the plate and batting .308 and .297 this season, respectively. Torres added a hit and Mazzotta logged an RBI.
Mazzotta also entered the game to pitch in the eighth inning, with two of the Seahawks' five strikeouts in the game. He went an inning, walking one batter and finishing as one of two Wagner pitchers who recorded multiple outs and did not give up a hit.
Righty Colin Trizuto started the game for the Seahawks, going 3.2 innings with four runs and three hits before Mazzotta entered in relief. From there, Wagner hit the bullpen hard.
Sophomore Keith Davis was third to enter the game and took the loss, giving up three runs on one hit on a bases-loaded, three-RBI double from Koby Kropf. Junior Justin Roitman then went 1.1 innings, giving up just one run. From there, sophomore right-hander Christopher Collina gave up a solo home run and was relieved by freshman William Grayson without recording an out.
The Seahawks will not have a midweek game and travel to Norfolk State to begin Northeastern Conference play over the weekend. The series will begin Friday and will mark the middle of what is an eight-game road stretch for Wagner before the team returns home March 14.
