Piscataway, NJ — Coming off a weekend sweep of Norfolk State, Wagner fell 9-3 in its Wednesday midweek at Rutgers.
Starting the game at shortstop, junior Nicholas Mazzotta continued his big production for the Seahawks, going 3-of-5 at the plate and now batting .323 through 14 games this season. Mazzotta also logged two putouts and four assists.
Senior right fielder Bryce Phelps was the only other Wagner player with multiple hits, going 2-of-2 with a run scored, continuing to lead the Seahawks with a .489 season batting average. Sophomore Diego Tavarez worked two walks, one of five the Seahawk batters tallied. He has appeared in and gotten on base in each game this season.
The Seahawks had eight total hits and left 11 runners stranded in Wednesday's game.
On the mound, Wagner's pitching staff started out strong, with sophomore Christopher Collina getting the start, followed by sophomore Keith Davis, senior Zach Gorman and junior A.J. Hiestand. Each threw an inning and between the four, just one hit was allowed.
The Scarlet Knights woke up quickly though, and put up all nine of their runs in the fifth inning. From the bottom of the fifth, the Seahawks used seven different arms to get through the end of the game, giving up five more hits and six walks.
Up next, Wagner returns to Staten Island for a series against LIU at SIUH Community Park. This will be the season's second NEC series and the Seahawks are coming off of a road sweep at Norfolk State. Game one will be played Friday, March 14 at 3 p.m. EST.
