Piscataway, NJ – The Wagner College softball team fell to Rutgers, 9-1, on Tuesday, March 11.
The Seahawks struck first in the opening inning. With freshman
Taylor Reynolds on second, junior
Geanice Morales on first, and
Alayna Giampolo on third, junior
Payton Janicki drew a bases-loaded walk, allowing Giampolo to cross home plate for Wagner's lone run.
Rutgers responded quickly, scoring twice in the bottom of the first and maintaining control for the rest of the game. The Seahawks struggled to find their rhythm, as the Scarlet Knights tallied nine runs en route to victory.
Sophomore
Karson Zavala started in the circle for Wagner, pitching three innings while allowing six hits, five runs, and striking out four batters. Junior
Natalie Rodriguez came in for relief, throwing 1.2 innings, surrendering three hits, four runs, and issuing just one walk.
The Seahawks will return home on Saturday, March 15, to take on NEC opponent Mercyhurst in Staten Island, NY.
