STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Wagner College women's basketball team (1-1, 0-0 NEC) defeated SUNYAC member SUNY New Paltz by a score of 88-46 in the Seahawks' 2025-26 home opener on Wednesday night.
Freshman Alivia Landy shot an efficient 9-10 from the floor off of the bench, leading all scorers with 23 points in 24 minutes. The East Greenbush, NY native added four rebounds, four assists, and three steals to her stat line.
Four other Seahawks scored in double-figures as senior Maria Doreste scored 12 and grabbed eight rebounds, junior Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor and redshirt senior Priscila Varela added 11 each, while junior Saioa San Francisco chipped in 10. Modesayor led Wagner with nine rebounds.
Redshirt junior Klea Kaci followed up with nine points, senior Malia Mpondo with eight, and junior Jada Johnson scored her first four points as a member of the Seahawks' program.
As a team, Wagner jumped out to a 19-7 first quarter lead and never looked back, building a 17-point lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Seahawks outscored the Hawks 49-24 thanks to a 20-point advantage in points in the paint, a 13-point advantage in points off of turnovers, and a 19-30 shooting clip (56.7%).
Landy scored 16 of her 23 points in the second half, shooting a perfect 6-6 from the floor during the time frame.
A 14-point fourth quarter scoring run punctuated the Seahawks' second half surge, bringing the lead to 42 with minutes remaining as the Seahawks picked up the wire-to-wire victory on their home court.
