NEWARK, N.J. – The Wagner College women's basketball team (1-2, 0-0 NEC) suffered a 78-58 loss to America East member NJIT (3-0, 0-0 AE) on Tuesday night at the Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center.
The Seahawks and Highlanders battled throughout the first half, NJIT held a lead for a majority of the first half but Wagner hung around, and even led with 2:51 remaining in the half after senior Maria Doreste found junior Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor on a layup to make it 28-27 in favor of the Seahawks.
At the halftime break, NJIT held a 32-28 lead over Wagner. Modesayor led Wagner with seven points and six rebounds. The Highlanders held a 11-6 advantage in points from turnovers while the Seahawks led 6-2 in second chance points.
In the third quarter, Modesayor scored eight out of Wagner's 18 points, however NJIT's 9-15 (60%) shooting clip and 14-4 advantage in points in the paint extended its lead 56-46.
In the fourth, freshman guard Alivia Landy led the Seahawks in points with four. In the second half, NJIT shot 17-31 (54.8%). Overall, Modesayor finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds followed by senior Malia Mpondo who had eight points, senior Anglie Ricard with seven, and freshman Alivia Landy with six.
The Seahawks did end the game with a 15-9 advantage in second chance points and a 38-18 advantage in bench points compared to the Highlanders.
