STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Wagner College field hockey team (7-11, 6-3 NEC) fell to NEC opponent Rider (8-9, 5-4 NEC) by a score of 4-3 on Friday afternoon in double overtime.
The Seahawks tied the game at three late midway through the fourth period as junior Floortje Leunisse found sophomore Romy Matthies near the cage to score the equalizer.
After a scoreless first overtime period, it would take nearly the entire second overtime period before Rider broke through on a game-winning goal off of a penalty corner opportunity.
Along with Matthies, freshman Julia de Leeuw and junior Felicitas Herrero both tallied scores for the Green & White, with senior Abby Reenock adding an assist on Herrero' goal.
As a team, Wagner took 12 shots with eight being put on target all while earning seven penalty corner chances. Rider attempted 14 shots with eight on goal while earning five penalty corners.
In the cage, senior Sam Black got the nod and rejected four shots, including two in the first overtime period.
Next up, the third-seeded Seahawks will take on the second-seeded Saint Francis U Red Flash on Thursday, November 6 in the semifinal round of the 2025 NEC Tournament. The opening center pass is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on the campus of Fairfield University.
