FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The No.3 ranked Wagner College field hockey team (8-11, 6-3 NEC) took down the No. 2 ranked Saint Francis U Red Flash (14-5, 8-1) by a score of 1-0 in the NEC Semifinal round on Friday afternoon on the campus of Fairfield University.
All-NEC Second Team selection junior Floortje Leunisse scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season off of a penalty corner opportunity late in the third quarter. Freshman Julie Povel gets credited with her third assist of the season on Leunisse's game-deciding goal. With Thursday's score, Leunisse leads the Seahawk roster in game-winning goals with five.
Freshman Julia de Leeuw and junior Victoria Bruno both applied pressure offensively with shots on goal.
In the cage, sophomore Saar van Dalen receives her eight win of the season to go along with her 82 saves.
As a team, the Seahawks attempted eight shots with four on target while earning seven penalty corners. The Red Flash only put up five shot attempts, with none on target, and earned two penalty corners.
Next up, a rematch of the 2024 NEC Championship match between Wagner and Fairfield is set for noon on Saturday, November 8 at University Field on the campus of Fairfield University. With the win, the Seahawks are competing in their third straight NEC title match.
