Philadelphia, PA – The Wagner men's and women's fencing teams competed at the Philadelphia Invitational over the weekend, delivering strong individual performances despite challenging team results. The women's team faced tough match ups, falling to Duke (18-9), Penn State (17-10), Yale (21-6), and UPenn (15-12). The men's team also endured narrow losses, dropping their matches against Duke (14-13), Penn State (16-11), UPenn (18-9), and Yale (20-7) .
For the men, freshman
Daniel Ojeda Buitrago and sophomore
Flavio Vinci led Wagner with impressive runs, each securing seven wins. Sophomore Issac Oden contributed five victories, while freshman
Emiliano Renteria added six wins to the team's tally. In their match up against Duke, the saber squad delivered a strong performance, winning their set (6-3). However, close losses in the epee (5-4) and foil (6-3) sets resulted in a one-point defeat to Duke (14-13), marking the team's smallest margin of the day.
On the women's side, senior Katrina Cervenkova stood out with a stellar performance, earning a total of eight wins. Sophomore
Renata Ziganova followed with five victories, and freshman
Villo Nyiri added six wins. Against UPenn, the epee squad claimed victory in their set (5-4), but the foil (6-3) and saber (5-4) squads came up short, leading to a 15-12 loss—their closest match of the weekend.
Both teams will return to action on Tuesday, January 21, at Princeton for a dual meet.
