Women’s Basketball Drops NEC Home Opener To CCSU

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's basketball team (4-11, 1-2 NEC) suffered a tough 62-55 loss to Central Connecticut State University (CCSU)(4-13, 3-1 NEC) in their Northeast Conference (NEC) home opener on Saturday afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center.

Graduate student Taleah Washington led the Seahawks with 17 points, hitting 7 of 18 shots. Junior Angelie Ricard contributed 10 points, while graduate student Julia Fabozzi scored nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Wagner started strong, opening the game with a quick 4-0 lead. The Blue Devils answered back and briefly held a five-point advantage in the first quarter, but the Seahawks responded. Ricard's layup at the buzzer gave Wagner an 18-16 lead heading into the second quarter.
CCSU hit a three-pointer early in the second quarter, but Washington answered back with a layup. A clutch three-pointer from freshman Elle Johansson pushed Wagner's lead to six, 29-23, with just over two minutes left in the half. At halftime, Wagner held a 31-25 lead.

The Seahawks continued to build momentum in the third quarter, extending their lead to as much as 10 points with 2:21 remaining. However, CCSU finished the quarter strong with a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 49-45 heading into the final frame.

The Blue Devils surged in the fourth quarter, and held a 52-51 advantage, with 7:08 left. They went on a 14-0 run that spanned nearly six minutes, extending their lead to 59-51. Wagner was unable to recover and fell to CCSU, 62-55.

The Blue Devils dominated the boards, outrebounding Wagner 43 to 40, and also knocked down three more shots from behind the arc.

Next up for Wagner is a road matchup with NEC newcomer Mercyhurst on Saturday, January 18, in Erie, PA, with tip-off set for 1:00 PM.
